Jobs for freshers: what the listings really ask for

We read the experience requirement on every live job we track. Of the 119,412 that state one, not a single posting asks for zero years. That is not as bad as it sounds, and it tells you exactly where to look.

In short

Half of all live postings state no experience requirement at all — and that half is where a fresher has a real chance. Of the half that does state one, the average is 5.1 years and not one asks for zero. So the openings for you are not hidden behind a lower number; they are in the roles that never printed a number.

What the listings actually say

We read the experience requirement on every live job we track. The result surprised us:

Of the live jobs we trackCount
State a minimum experience119,412 (51%)
State nothing at all116,722 (49%)
Average minimum, where stated5.1 years
Ask for zero yearsnone

Counted on 23 October 2026 across every live job we track. The totals grow as we crawl; the proportions hold.

Employers who write a number almost never write "0". A graduate role is advertised as a graduate role, a trainee role as a trainee role — by its title, not by a zero in an experience field. That is the pattern to search on.

Where the openings for freshers actually are

  1. Roles with a fresher word in the titleTrainee, graduate, associate, intern, junior, apprentice, "campus". These are written for people with no experience and say so in the title rather than the requirements.
  2. The 49% that state no requirementNo stated minimum means no filter to fail. Your resume is read on what it shows rather than on a number.
  3. Graduate programmes and campus hiringRun on a calendar, usually with a deadline. Worth tracking by employer rather than by search.
  4. Roles one year above youA posting asking for one year will often take a strong fresher with a six-month internship. Two years is a stretch; three is a filter you will not pass.
3

How far short you can afford to be

This is the question behind "should I apply anyway?", and there is a usable answer. When an employer states a minimum, they usually filter on it:

The gapWorth applying?
No minimum statedYes — this is your market
One year shortYes, especially with an internship to show
Two years shortOnly if the rest of the fit is unusually strong
Three or more years shortNo — it is filtered before anyone reads it

A hundred applications to roles wanting five years produces nothing, and it is the commonest way a fresher concludes the market is closed. Thirty applications to graduate and trainee roles, sent in the first days of posting, is a far better use of the same effort.

A resume with no jobs on it

  1. Count your internships as workWith months and what you did. Many employers count six months towards a one-year requirement, and it is the fastest way to stop reading as a fresher.
  2. Give projects the shape of experienceWhat you built, what you used, what came of it. "Built X with Y, used by Z people" beats a list of technologies.
  3. Put your institution's full name on itIt is the sixth most asked question on application forms, usually against a fixed list. The full name matches where an abbreviation does not.
  4. Name the tools you can actually openA fresher's skills section is read sceptically. Four things you can be questioned on beat twenty you cannot.

A two-week plan

  1. Days 1–2: pick two titlesNot "any job". Two titles whose postings you can actually read and recognise yourself in.
  2. Day 3: rewrite the top third of your resumeFor those two titles, with your internship and best project above the fold.
  3. Days 4–12: apply every morningTo the fresher-titled roles and to the ones stating no minimum, within a day or two of posting.
  4. Keep a list of employers, not just jobsGraduate programmes run on a calendar. Missing the window costs a year; knowing it is on costs nothing.
  5. Day 14: read your listIf close, early applications to fresher roles still get nothing, the resume is the problem — not the volume.

Applying early, every day, without doing it by hand

Jobaaj One watches for new roles that match your years and skills, and applies on the day they appear — which is the part of this plan that is hardest to keep up for two weeks.

Questions

How do I find jobs that accept freshers?

Half of all postings state no experience requirement at all, and those are where a fresher has a real chance. Look for roles titled trainee, graduate, associate, intern or junior, and for campus and graduate programmes, which are written for people with no experience.

Should I apply for a job asking for 2 years of experience?

One year short of the stated minimum is worth applying for. Three or more years short is almost always filtered out before anyone reads it, and the time is better spent on roles you fit.

Do internships count as experience?

Yes, and you should list them as work, with the months and what you did. Many employers count a six-month internship towards a one-year requirement, and it is the easiest way for a fresher to stop looking like one.

What should a fresher put on a resume with no jobs on it?

Projects, the coursework that matches the role, any internship, and tools you can actually use. Put them in the same shape as work experience, with what you did and what came of it.

Is it worth applying to 100 jobs as a fresher?

Volume helps only if the roles fit. A hundred applications to roles asking for five years gets nothing; thirty to graduate and trainee roles, applied for in the first days of posting, is a far better use of the same effort.
